Padded Mailers FAQs

Is There a Difference Between Padded Mailers & Padded Envelopes?

The terms padded mailer and padded envelope are used relatively interchangeably in the packaging and shipping industries. Some refer to padded envelopes as smaller than padded mailers. But for all intents and purposes they are the same thing.

What is the Difference Between a Padded Mailer and a Bubble Mailer?

A padded mailer is sturdier than bubble mailers, since they feature consistent padding throughout. Bubble mailers offer a lightweight construction with inner bubble wrap that provides nice cushioning. And bubble envelopes are more flexible than your padded mailer, whereas padded envelopes offer tougher, more rigid protection. So ultimately the choice comes down to you and what you are shipping. Different items require different mailers.

When you choose Preferred Plastics & Packaging as your supplier for packaging and shipping supplies, both bubble mailers and padded mailers are available to choose from:

How Do You Seal Padded Mailers?

There are multiple ways to seal a padded mailer. For seal-sealing mailers, you do not need any additional tape or staples in order to seal the envelope. Simply remove the plastic strip on the top of the built-in adhesive and fold over the lip to seal it. If the padded envelope is not of the self-sealing kind, then you can use tape or staples to be sure it is properly sealed.

Is It Cheaper to Mail a Box or a Padded Envelope?

For smaller items, it is almost always more affordable to ship via a padded envelope than a box. They are smaller and more lightweight than a box, while still offering adequate protection. By doing so, you will be lowering shipping costs when you choose a padded mailing envelope over a carboard box, while also saving yourself some time since packaging boxes is more time-consuming than an envelope. And less tape is used as well, so you save money on using less tape during the shipping process. Which can add up over the course of shipments.

How Do I Ship Padded Mailers?

Padded mailers can be shipped through many shipping services, including FedEx, UPS, and USPS. Before shipping out, be sure to check with your carrier for specific rules and regulations regarding shipping methods.
